Book Reviews

The Grown Up by Gillian Flynn

I have been on a reading roller coaster last two weeks wherein I read 5 books. I have such a huge TBR list that I have put myself on a no-book shopping clause. It happens to me all the time. I have a crossword near my place and I have to visit it like at least once a week and when I go I just can’t stop myself buying even though I still haven’t finished reading the books I bought last time. Does it happen to you guys too ? So now I am not going to buy any new book until I finish all the ones I have. I just finished The Book Thief which I will be reviewing soon and honest to god I had tears in my eyes. That book really does know how to pull the right strings. Before when I was reading it during break time and I kind of teared up my colleague got worried like what the hell happened to this girl!! It was embarrassing to explain it. Anyhoo one of my friends sent me this book titled The Grown Up by Gillian Flynn. She is the famous author behind Gone Girl. Its a really short story, something you can read on your way to work or school.

Synopsis: A young woman is making a living faking it as a cut-price psychic(with some illegal soft-core sex work on the side). She makes a decent wage mostly by telling people what they want to hear. But then she meets Susan Burke. Susan moved to the city one year ago with her husband and 15-year-old stepson Miles. They live in a Victorian house called Carterhook Manor. Susan has become convinced that some malevolent spirit is inhabiting their home. The young woman doesn’t believe in exorcism or the supernatural. However when she enters the house for the first time, she begins to feel it too, as if the very house is watching her, waiting, biding its time…

What I felt: The grown up is like Usain Bolt. It picks up the pace from page one and doesn’t lag even for a second. Gillian is an amazing writer and she plays with the readers minds very well. The moment you feel you have figured it out bam! you get hit by another twist. I won’t give any spoilers but the ending leaves you like “what did just happen!!” and also wanting to read what happens next. It is very ambiguous. And I would like to believe in the ending as the main character wished. Like the character says ” You are either screwed or not screwed, so chose to believe  that you aren’t”. I would definitely recommend it if you like reading mystery books.

I would give it a 4/5 👻  👻  👻  👻

Cheers!!
